What to do in Montauk, NY
Where is Montauk?
Montauk, NY is located on Long Island at the very east end. It is at the south shore tip of Long Island if you are looking at a map. Many people travel near and far to visit this beautiful area. You might have seen Montauk on your favorite reality show as many celebrities travel to Montauk and the Hamptons every year. While Montauk is considered part of the Hamptons, Montauk in itself has much to offer. Although Montauk attracts the most people between Memorial Day and Labor day, there are still things to do throughout the year.
Let’s get into what do in Montauk, NY. 🙂
1. Montauk Point Lighthouse
First up is the Montauk lighthouse. This is a must-see while in Montauk. The lighthouse is at the very tip of Long Island in Montauk and has the most gorgeous views. You could walk up the lighthouse to see some breathtaking views. It is overlooking the beach and is beautiful anytime of the day. Keep in mind this area does tend to get crowded so plan your day out accordingly. Also, you could walk down the beach by the lighthouse and climb some rocks on the beach. If you are one that does not want to go to the top of the lighthouse, the rocks could be your happy medium. 🙂
2. Restaurants
Montauk has some amazing restaurants that are near the water and on their main street. You will find some that are only open during peak season (especially some seafood restaurants). Be sure to call the restaurant or check their website/social media prior to going.
Some recommendations are below:
- Shagwong Tavern: The restaurant is located right on the water. You will see anything from seafood, meat, and vegetarian options. The food is delicious and they have some awesome drinks.
- Hooked Restaurant: This seafood restaurant has delicious lobster rolls and cheesy yummy mac and cheese. The restaurant has a laidback atmosphere with outdoor seating.
- Gosmans: This is a seafood restaurant with gorgeous water views. They offer outdoor seating and will be some of the freshest seafood you ever had. The service is excellent here. Definitley add them to your list!
3. Visit Hamptons
Yes, the infamous Hamptons as some may know is right here on Long Island on the eastern side. By “Hamptons” I mean East Hampton, Westhampton, Bridgehampton, and Southampton since Montauk is part of the Hamptons. While the Hamptons is more exciting during the summer, there are still some things to check out during other seasons. The summers tend to get crowded but also have amazing restaurants on the water. You will get amazing seafood during the summer months. In addition, they have horse shows and other fun activities that open up in the summer months.
If you are traveling during an off summer month, the Hamptons is a gorgeous place to see. It will be more quiet and some local restaurants are still open year round. Be sure to check with the restaurant prior as a lot of restaurants are seasonal just like Montauk.
Restaurant recommendations nearby:
- LUNCH Lobster Roll: Perfect Lobster rolls if you are a lobster roll lover. The hot lobster roll is a favorite of many and cooked to perfection. In addition, the portions are generous. There are a couple locations; however, the Southampton one is right on Montauk Hwy which is the main highway that leads to the Hamptons/Montauk.
- Cowfish restaurant: This restaurant has amazing views and is located in Hampton Bays. They offer brunch, lunch, and dinner options. This is a great place to visit all year round as the views from the inside are right on the water. The happy hour menu is also something you do not want to miss whether you go for the food or the drinks.
- Rumba restaurant: Rumba in Hampton Bays is a boat ride away in the summer from Cowfish. This restaurant offers Caribbean food and the best Rum punch of your life (trust me on this). All the food is delicious and also has gorgeous views. Also, this is a restaurant that is open all year round.
- Clam Bar at Napeague: Omg, BEST Lobster rolls are here!! If you are a fan of lobster rolls this is a must try. I know, they are clearly known for their clams but the lobster rolls are also a must. The soups are excellent too. Enjoy!
4. Visit Vineyards
Fourth on the list is visiting Vineyards. Long Island is full of Vineyards. A lot of Vineyards are on the eastern side of Long Island and some are on the North fork of Long Island. However, they are not difficult to get to from Montauk. The Vineyards are great for those social media posts due to how gorgeous they are. Vineyards on the island are so sought after that they have become a sought after wedding venue for many. If you are one that loves wine, cheese, and views some Vineyard recommendations are below.
- Sparkling Pointe in Southold: This Vineyard has sparkling wine only. If you go in the colder months, there are many places to sit inside. They also have charcuterie boards you could order with your wine. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommend checking this place out if you want an upscale experience and love sparkling wine.
- Palmer Vineyards in Riverhead: If you are looking for amazing wine with gorgeous views, this is your place. There are also some places to sit inside if it is chilly when you make your visit. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable!
-
Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard In Calverton: If you are going with a large party or want somewhere with live music/food this is your place. Depending on when you go there could be some live music and a food truck. In addition, I went in the winter once and they had an outdoor space with a fireplace and heaters inside. It was cozy and set the mood. This Vineyard tends to get crowded so make reservations ahead of time.
-
Macari Vineyards in Mattituck: This Vineyard is gorgeous inside and out. There are places to relax and sip wine inside and outside. They have some fun events throughout the year so check out their website and make a reservation.
5. Beach
If you are a beach lover, you will absolutely love Montauk. There is no shortage of beaches in the area since you are on an island, of course. 😉 Honestly, all the beaches are wonderful but the south shore beaches will be less rocky than the north shore beaches of the island. Lucky for you, Montauk is on the south shore. Below is a starter list of beaches in the Hamptons/Montauk area.
- Westhampton Beach – This is a bit far from Montauk. However, would be on your way to Montauk if you live out west or out of state.
- Gin Beach
- Sunset Beach – Check this out if you are going to Gosman’s restaurant!
6. Shelter Island
Shelter Island is an easy ferry ride away when you are visiting Long Island. It is a small island that is part of Long Island. There are bars, restaurants, and beaches all along the coast. Be sure to check this out in the summertime. In addition, if you rent a boat you could take your boat to Shelter Island. This small island is a lot of fun and has plenty to do in the warmer months.
7. Camp Hero State Park
This park is beautiful and offers a lot! You could go hiking, biking, horseback riding, and see the beach. Walk around this beach and enjoy the wildlife. In addition, if you love fishing, you could fish here with certain permits. Be sure to check out the camp website for details. There is also a high point where you could see breathtaking views/take pictures.

- Southampton – Southampton has a lot of restaurants and events that happen. This is a great place to stay if you want to be where all the action is

- Old Montauk Rd is a perfect road to stay on. For starters, you will within walking distance from the beach. Also, you will be close enough to the main street area but far enough away where it is not super crowded.
- Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa: This is a beach club/resort that also has gorgeous views. If you want to experience the gym, spa, and be literally on the beach, be sure to check them out. However, you must either have a membership or decide to stay here in order to use the beach. This place is extremely exclusive and you will find influencers/celebrities. If you are really looking for a true/fun Montauk/Hamptons experience out of a show, stay here.
10. Shopping
Lastly is shopping! There are plenty of shops in the Montauk area and a lot of them are local business owners. You will find one of a kind items while you are there that are great souvenirs to bring back home. The gift shops are by the beach and along the main street where a lot of restaurants are. The main street area has on street parking or in certain lots. However, this is a great walking area if you decide to book your accommodation nearby this main street area.
If you are looking for more high end stores, be sure to go to East Hampton.
Montauk is a great location if you are looking for serenity and gorgeous ocean views. The ideal time to visit Montauk would be in the late spring and summertime since all the restaurants will be open for season. However, a benefit of going to Montauk during off peak season is how serene and slow it is. Whenever you choose to go you will not be disappointed as this area has much to offer.
