1. Stay hydrated
It is SO important to stay hydrated while flying. I know what you might be thinking, “But I do not want to have to get up to use the bathroom every hour….” For long flights (and a reputable airline), the flight attendants do ensure the bathroom stays clean for the duration of the flight. In addition, the human body loses about 8% of water while flying! There is nothing worse than getting off a plane with a migraine. Reminder: Alcohol dehydrates you. I know we are all excited and want to enjoy those free cocktails on flights. However, too much alcohol could lead to migraines and exhaustion. Not saying do not have that cocktail to celebrate being on vacation. Please limit the alcohol intake and swap out water instead 🙂 Keep a refillable bottle handy so you do not have to ask the flight attendant for water every hour. Major airports have a water filtration system where you can fill up right before you board. Your body will thank you later!

3. Have plenty of entertainment
Sometimes you might get bored with the in flight entertainment. There are also times the in flight entertainment is temporarily suspended due to weather or technological issues. Happens to the best of us, right? Bring your favorite or new book you have been waiting to read. If you are anything like me, I prefer a physical book in hand. I know, I know that is very old school. If you are a kindle person, the good news is you could download a bunch of books if you are a fast reader. There is a sense of accomplishment when finishing a book on vacation. Every time you see or hear of the book you could be reminded of one of your best trips. Let’s be serious, every vacation can turn into one of the best vacations depending on the company, food, and memories made. Bring a pair of headphones/Air Pods and download your favorite podcast or music. The time will go by faster if you keep yourself entertained while not sleeping.

4. Stay Cozy
For international flights, a lot of airlines will give you a pillow, blanket, and eye mask. However, ensure you are checking your particular airline/flight for this information. If those items are not offered or you are picky, bring your own neck pillow, blanket, and eye mask. While the flight crews typically do an amazing job at keeping everything lights out for long flights, food or beverage service can take some time and will result in the lights on. Therefore, it is important to have that eye mask handy. Dress in comfy clothes!!! It is more than ok to dress up at the airport if that is your prerogative. However, you want to be comfortable on a long flight. So pack those comfy shoes, fuzzy socks or slippers, and your favorite matching sweatsuit set. I would recommend changing right before you get on the flight. The plane bathrooms tend to be extremely small. It could be difficult changing inside them.

5. Pack some snacks
While some long flights (depending on what you consider a long flight) include a food and beverage service, pack some snacks to be safe. If you have solid snacks that could fit in a carry-on or personal item, you can bring them! This is a fact that many people do not know. A friend of mine packs sandwiches for herself every trip she goes on. She is at east because she knows if she gets hungry she has a sandwich waiting for her. I would be careful with foods that are perishable. Those kinds of foods would need to be eaten within a couple hours. In addition, you do not want to forget about the food and have it spoil in your bag. It is nice to not have to wait to have food offered to you and keep in mind at times the in flight snack service is suspended or delayed for an unforeseen reason. Nothing worse than having to spend a bunch of money on airport snacks. In addition, if you are a picky eater and do not know what to expect for the in flight service, you are guaranteed a good snack 😉
6. Pack toiletries
Most of us have been there, in the middle of a long flight you feel gross. You were at the airport since 5:00am, sweating as you were rushing to get to your gate. You want to brush your teeth, brush your hair, apply some deodorant. As long as you adhere to the 3.4 fluid oz and under rule for carry on items, you can pack those items! A mini dry shampoo, toothbrush + toothpaste, makeup, and a travel size deodorant goes a long way. Keep in mind that it typically takes time to get to your final destination after the plane lands. For those long international flights, the planes are bigger which means it takes longer to deplane. It could sometimes take hours by the time you get off the plane, grab your luggage, and find your transportation (especially if you choose public transit). It would be beneficial to be refreshed getting off the plane (or in the airport bathroom) so you will not feel so rushed getting to your accommodations.

7. Get up and stretch
Finally, it is time to get up and stretch that body. I know none of us want to keep getting up during a long flight, but it is needed. It is beneficial to get up every hour if you are awake during the flight. Even if you get up for a quick stretch or do a quick lap up the aisle, it will help tremendously when you get off the flight. If you stay sitting for too long, you could be more prone to back aches and cramps. And that is no way to start off a vacation. You will feel the difference physically when you get up and stretch every hour. Compression socks could help on a long flight, especially if you at high risk for blood clots. It is important to take care of your body at all times when traveling. No one wants to feel bleh their first few days of a vacation.
