7 Smart Strategies on how to pack toiletries for air travel
1. Make a list
First things first, you need to make a list of everything you are going to pack. Keep in mind that there is potential that the list cannot be used for all trips and all seasons. For example, a tropical vacation, you will likely not pack the same as for a snowboarding trip in Vermont. You will need that sunscreen for a tropical vacation and additional face moisturizer for that Vermont trip. It is important to stay organized and ensure you have everything or have plenty of time to order/buy anything you need.
Do not wait until the last minute to make a list in case you have to go out and buy something. Keep in mind that during peak travel season, the stores run out of travel size bottles/containers. You do not want to be that person that is running around last-minute hunting every store for what you need for your trip. Ladies do not forget any sanitary items you may need if it’s that time of the month. Many countries outside of America do not have tampons and that could be a pain. Ensure you are prepared and add that to your list, if needed.

2. Organizer Bags/Packing Cubes
Do you hate digging in a bag for all your toiletries? A packing cube could help keep you organized and keep everything separate. Packing cubes are a game changer. They are gaining popularity for a reason. Packing cubes basically guarantees organization when you travel. In addition, they do not weigh a lot AT ALL if you are worried about that 50 lb. checked bag limit. There are many different sizes/shapes for packing cubes, but they also have specified smaller cubes for toiletries!
Traveling with children/family
If you are traveling with children, it could be something fun that you pick out with your child. The packing cubes will also separate your clothes from your child’s if you are sharing a suitcase. In addition, it will also save you time from having to dig into your suitcase to find toiletries every time you need them. Also, there are organizers if you are that adamant about not joining the packing cubes club – judgement free zone but you are missing out;). OR there are organizers that you could fit inside your packing cube. Now that is for the extreme organizer – again no judgement either way 😊

3. Place liquids in plastic bags
We have all been there. Something spilled over and is all over your suitcase ☹ The liquid has gotten on your clothes and your favorite black lace heels you were going to wear tonight. That is literally the worst, but there is a way to avoid it. Placing any liquid toiletries in a plastic bag is life changing. If the liquid leaks, no worries because it is all inside that plastic bag. In addition, you could bring some extra plastic bags in case a leak does happen. Make sure the plastic bags are leak proof and sturdy! Also, heavy-duty plastic bags tend to last longer and you could keep reusing them for all those trips you have planned. Recommendation: Find the ones that have the thicker zipper and advertise leak free.
4. No checked bag = Stay under 3.4 Fl. Oz.
You might be asking yourself, can I pack full size toiletries in checked luggage? It is SO important to stay under the travel size 3.4 fluid oz if you are not checking a bag. Checked luggage you could go ahead and pack those full size containers. If you do not comply with this then TSA will confiscate your toiletries that are not within the limit. This is a federal regulation, and you do not want to be delayed because TSA is going through your luggage. No one wants to have to hunt for their favorite shampoo on the first day of vacation. Keep in mind if you are traveling internationally, the local stores might not even have your favorite items.
Solution!
Ok, I know what you are thinking, “I cannot find my all my toiletry items at 3.4 fl. oz and under…” The solution to this is to buy empty plastic containers. The empty containers are a life and money saver! Instead of buying travel size items every time you prepare for a trip, you could simply refill the empty containers. The containers tend to last a long time, I have had some for years.

5. Check TSA Guidelines
Every airport is different, and some require you to have ALL toiletries in a clear plastic bag. Some even ask you to take it out if it is in a carry-on. You do not want any surprises at the airport. The airport should be the time you relax and get in that vacay mode. Keep that in mind while traveling and look up the local regulations if you are unfamiliar with an airport or country. Even if you are a frequent traveler, still check the airport regulations prior to your trip. Airports do change their policies often and you do not want to be unprepared. It will put you at ease to be as prepared as possible when arriving at the airport.
6. Categories are key
This goes hand in hand with a checklist. If you are one that has a lot of toiletries you might not be able to fit them all in a carry on suitcase or handbag/backpack. If that is the case, choose the items you might need before you arrive at your destination or during the plane ride. You deserve to feel fresh and like a queen the minute you step off the flight. Keep in mind this takes organization though! A toothbrush or mouthwash, hairbrush, and some makeup goes a long way while traveling.
Plan ahead
Plan/think ahead so you know what you will need. Go through the items you use on a daily and weekly basis. Be mindful of what you plan on doing on your flight. For example, if you plan on sleeping the entire trip, you will likely need that mouthwash 😉 If you are one of those people that cannot sleep on a plane, you might look semi refreshed when you step off the plane. It depends on how long the flight is and what you are planning. It is better to be prepared than regret not bringing certain items though.
7. Remember Vitamins/Medication
Lastly most people keep medications in their medicine cabinet, so this one is part of the toiletry group. This is again why it is important to have a checklist. In addition, a checklist not only keeps your organized but almost guarantees you will not forget any essentials. Vitamins will keep you awake and healthy for that flight. Do not forget items such as Excedrin, Advil, (anything you normally take when a headache comes on).
Keep in mind a change of scenery or altitude can sometimes lead to you not feeling your best. In addition, depending on where you are, you might not have easy access to such medicines. If you need melatonin as a sleep aid, you want to ensure this is packed especially with time zone changes. The change in time zone can really mess with our internal clock. Any prescription medication that is taken, pack days before (if possible). You do not want to forget important meds!
*Please consult your physician before taking any medication
